Lighthouse Keeper's Badge
Back in the day before automation, the most important part of the Lighthouse Keeper’s duties was to keep the light operating according to the daily schedule. During a storm like a hurricane or a nor’easter, the light had to be kept in operation 24 hours a day until the storm was over. The Keeper began his day by dressing in the official uniform of the Lighthouse Service. The uniform consisted of blue pants, vest, suit jacket, and hat. The uniform had to be worn at all times on duty. Exceptions were granted if particularly messy maintenance work was being completed. While a badge was not necessarily a required part of the clothing, there was an official emblem on the Lighthouse Keepers hat. This solid brass Lighthouse Keepers badge with heavy duty pin represents the hat emblems and makes for a great souvenir, travel memento, keepsake and costume accessory.
